About Calvary
Calvary was begun in 1989 under the Rev. Jay Haug as a new "mission church"
for this area. At that time, a number of families were sent out from All Souls
Church in Mandarin to begin a new Episcopal fellowship in the Intracoastal/Beaches area.
Since its inception, Calvary has been committed to being a Biblically-based and
worship-centered church within the Anglican tradition.
We understand the meaning of the church to be a gathering of those people who have
encountered the living Lord Jesus Christ and surrendered their lives to Him. We come
together so that we can worship Him, learn to
know and follow Him better, encourage each other, and make His love and goodness
known to the world around us.
One of the things that we feel particularly called to at Calvary is to
be a real community together with Christ at the center. Jesus said that the world
would know us by our love for each other (Jn. 13:35), and to love each other, well,
we have to know each other. So our prayer and hope is to be a fellowship
of individuals committed to Christ and committed to helping each other grow in Christ.
Another area we feel deeply about is wanting to share what God has done for us with others around us
(2 Cor. 5:20), particularly for those who would not normally gravitate toward a
church, either because of personal or cultural reasons, or because they live where
a church is not present. We believe these are our concern in a
special sense, whether they live in Jacksonville or in Uzbekistan. These people are a
special concern to our church.
We also are strongly committed to being a place where children and young people
are not only welcomed, but are equipped to grow as followers of Christ.
One important aspect of this, in addition to specialized programs, is including
children as much as possible in the worship and fellowship of the whole
church together. It is our prayerful desire to be a truly inter-generational fellowship.
This is an exciting time for us at Calvary, as we are seeing God answer many
prayers, and there's a palpable sense of Him doing things around us. Of course, it's also a sobering time,
because we want to be sure we tune into all that He is leading
us into. It is good to know that He promises to complete the
work that He begins.
